Does the new year have you looking at ways to add more physical activity? Our team members have been exploring ways to improve their fitness over the next year, too. Many of them say that signing up for local fitness classes and activities makes workouts more fun and helps them stay motivated enough to make the habit stick.
Think you might benefit from this approach? Get your blood pumping with these five winter fitness classes happening around Myrtle Beach.
Yoga in Common has been teaching yoga to Myrtle Beach residents for longer than any other studio in the city. The current course selection features more than a dozen specialized yoga experiences, including:
All courses are open for sign-ups this winter. If you're completely new to yoga, they also offer an introductory course to help beginners learn the basics quickly.
Most classes are around an hour long and cost $25 to join. You can use the studio's website to check out which classes are coming up and reserve your spot in any that interests you.
Zumba is a popular workout activity that fuses standard aerobic exercises with Latin dance choreography. The whole-body movements and ever-changing steps are sure to keep you on your toes, and each session will help you work on your cardio and muscle conditioning.
The Crabtree Memorial Gymnasium offers Zumba classes at the following times each week:
Fees are $4 per class for city residents or $10 for non-residents. All classes last around 45 minutes and are designed to be accessible to participants of all skill levels.
If you're more into country than salsa, the Crabtree Memorial Gym's Line Up & Dance class series might be a better fit for you.
This class transforms simple line dancing steps into a vigorous workout that is sure to get your heart racing.
The 8-week series will begin on January 8th and continue every Thursday morning from 11 AM to 12 PM until the end of February. Course fees are $20 for residents or $35 for non-residents. Because each class builds on the material covered in the previous session, the organizers recommend attending every session in the series if you can.
Do you live with chronic pain, mobility problems, or other disabilities? The AM Fitness Program at the Mary C. Canty Recreation Center is designed to help you improve your fitness in a way that works for you. Each class begins with a low-intensity workout with customized adaptive exercises for those who need them. After that, participants play a fun game like basketball or capture the flag.
The first session of the year is scheduled for January 13th from 11 AM to 12 PM. Classes will continue every Tuesday and Thursday at the same time until the program wraps up in mid-May. Fees are $10 for Myrtle Beach residents or $20 for non-residents and include admission to all classes.
It's always a good idea to practice some basic swimming skills, especially if you live in a place like Myrtle Beach. That's why the Pepper Geddings Recreation Center is offering a class called AQPG201 that covers swimming fundamentals for adults.
This single-session course is scheduled for January 27th from 7:30 AM to 8:15 AM. Another course coming up in February will build on the skills taught here and further improve your confidence in the water. Space in both courses is very limited for safety reasons, so sign up fast if you're interested.
